Case Study – underfloor heating installation using Profix panels

Underfloor heating supply and fit project completed by ourselves in Eckington, Pershore, Worcestershire.

Project type: Ground floor – ufh to new extension and also to existing parts of the ground floor.

Heat source:  Boiler

Pipe centres:  150 mm cc

Installation method:  Pipe (within new floor screed) clipped onto insulation in new side and rear extension, pipe within profix panels (above concrete) with self levelling compound in existing parts of the ground floor.

Manifold used: A 10-circuit Watts manifold with a Grundfos UPS2 pump and Reliance mixing valve

Day 1: Profix panels fitted onto concrete floor, sikabond glue was used plus also screws and plugs.

Pipe used: Valsir 12 mm Pex/al/pex multuilayer pipe.  In the new extension 16 mm pipe was used, as a new concrete floor.  It helps to lay down the pipe coil horizontally e.g. onto a pipe decoiler – to reduce anyy pressure building up at the bends (avoid pipe springing up).

Profix panels are 15 mm deep, they came with 3 mm XPS insulation prebonded.

System filled with water. Obviously we also adjust the flow rates for each pipe circuit on installation day, to make it as easy as possible to start the ufh at a later date.

Rothenberger test pump connected during pressure test at 6 bar !  As you can see we’ve marked up all individual loop lengths on the manifold.  It can only be of benefit even in the future to know each circuit length.

The Valsir 12mm underfloor heating pipework within the profix panels, was to be covered by levelling compound before a tile floor finish was fitted on top.  The customer is really pleased with the performance.  However from an installer’s point of view, this is a time consuming way of installing retrofit ufh.
